Biography: 

In addition to her private practice at Bastyr Center for Natural Health, Mary has been a clinical supervisor at the teaching clinic since 2010 and will begin her role as an adjunct professor at Bastyr University starting winter 2015. Mary regularly teaches nutrition workshops all over Seattle, manages an online detox, and provides corporate wellness presentations at local businesses.

Clinical Interests:

Mary takes great interest in the prevention, treatment and reversal of such health conditions as blood sugar issues, cardiometabolic issues, food sensitivities/allergies and digestive issues as well as auto-immune, inflammatory and hormone related conditions. She also enjoys helping patients explore and improve their relationship with food and address issues around emotional eating.

Healing Philosophy:

With a focus on whole foods and food as medicine, Mary adheres to the functional and integrative medicine model of taking a whole person approach in her nutritional counseling. She considers all aspects and needs of each individual, meets the patient where he/she is at and helps to create realistic goals collaboratively, while also providing education and motivation. She enjoys working with patients in a supportive and encouraging environment to help sleuth out and uncover underlying imbalances that may be contributing to medical issues.

Past Experience:

Before joining Practitioner Care at Bastyr Center, Mary was in private practice at Seattle Healing Arts Center since 2008. She also spent two years as an outpatient dietitian at Harborview Hospital and has been providing workshops and wellness presentations at businesses and local organizations, big and small, around Seattle since 2006. She has been interviewed on KUOW and KIRO News and quoted in numerous magazine articles and health blogs including Prevention, Experience Life and Natural Health. She has been on the board of Dietitians in Integrative and Functional Medicine for the past three years and is the Past President of the Greater Seattle Dietetic Association. Prior to her career in nutrition, she worked as both a professional actor and corporate diversity/cultural sensitivity trainer in New York City. She writes a regular nutrition blog and is currently working on a book about detoxification and clean eating. Her website is NourishingBalance.com.
