What Happens During a Naturopathic Medicine Appointment?

Many people are interested in visiting a naturopathic physician at Bastyr Center for Natural Health but aren’t sure what to expect. How exactly does a naturopathic medicine appointment work at Bastyr Center?

Meet Your Team
As the teaching clinic of Bastyr University, Bastyr Center applies a Team Care approach to your care. This means that you will be seen by a team of providers consisting of a licensed naturopathic physician working with 2-3 advanced naturopathic medicine students, all invested in the outcome of your care.

Naturopathic physicians (NDs) are licensed as primary health care providers in the state of Washington and have four to five years of medical training, including a two-year clinical internship. They treat a wide variety health conditions by integrating the latest scientific medical information with centuries-old wisdom about natural therapies. Naturopathic doctors in Washington state can prescribe a number of pharmaceutical drugs (such as antibiotics) and perform minor office procedures, and will refer you to outside physicians for more invasive procedures.

Physicians Who Listen
Whether you are experiencing a specific health issue or you want to optimize your wellness, our caring providers take the time to listen to you and conduct a thorough investigation of your health. Typically, first appointments last 1 to 1 1/2 hours and include a comprehensive interview regarding your health concerns and health history. Your team will also conduct a physical examination and order relevant testing and they will obtain information on your diet and lifestyle to integrate into your treatment plan. Most appointments also include a routine check of your vital signs and other exams appropriate to your symptoms or concerns. It is helpful to bring along copies of previous tests, lab results and the names of any medications or supplements you are currently taking. Your team will use all of this information to learn about your whole health picture and create a customized treatment plan for you. Throughout the process, we encourage you participate as an active partner in your own health care — to ask questions, discuss issues and take part in the decisions about your treatment.

Discover Your Path to Wellness
What kind of treatments should you expect? Our providers work to uncover the underlying causes of your illness, rather than simply eliminate your symptoms. Your team will search first for the least intrusive methods of treatment with the lowest risk of side effects. They may prescribe vitamin/mineral supplements, herbal or homeopathic remedies, provide physical medicine and hydrotherapy treatments, or recommend changes in diet, lifestyle and exercise.

If you are also seeing an MD, it is very important that both of your physicians are aware of the treatments you are receiving as well as any medications, herbs or natural supplements you are taking. Naturopathic physicians are trained in herb/drug interactions and can help assure that any herbs or supplements you take are compatible with your medications.

You will find that a visit with a naturopathic team at Bastyr Center empowers you to take control of your own health as an active participant rather than a spectator. Your team will take the time to listen to you about your health concerns and guide you to toward greater well-being.
