Probiotics for Immunity

While there may be no cure for the common cold, there are tools available to help us cope with the symptoms. A recent study showed that a diet including probiotics can decrease the duration and severity of cold and flu symptoms in young children. A 2006 study by Bastyr University and the University of Washington showed similar results in adults.

Probiotics are beneficial microorganisms that live in our intestines, aiding digestion and strengthening immunity. Probiotics can be found as a supplement in powdered form and are also present in most types of yogurt. When eating yogurt, check the label for the phrase “live and active cultures” or for the names of the cultures themselves, including S. thermophilus, L. bulgaricus, L. acidophilus and Bifidus. For more information about probiotics, call Bastyr Center at 206.834.4100 to make an appointment with a nutritionist or naturopathic physician.
