New Program at Bastyr Center Supports Body's Healing Ability

One of the founding principles of naturopathic medicine is to recognize the body’s innate ability to heal itself. This fall, Bastyr Center for Natural Health introduced a new opportunity for patients to experience this key principle through Nature Cure appointments, available on Saturday mornings. The Nature Cure philosophy focuses on the use of natural substances such as air, water, mud, steam, clay and herbs in different applications to regulate the nervous system and bring it into a relaxed and receptive state that enables the body’s own healing abilities to take over.

The naturopathic physician supervising these appointments is Melinda Beck, ND, who studied Nature Cure techniques throughout Europe. Dr. Beck worked with physicians at clinics and hospitals in Germany, Hungary, the Czech Republic and other parts of the continent where she learned the underlying principles of hydrotherapy and other Nature Cure techniques. When she returned from her trip in 2006, Dr. Beck brought these principles into the classroom at Bastyr University where she taught a European Spa Medicine course to naturopathic medicine students.

Now, as one of the only physicians in the country to offer these services in a clinical setting, Dr. Beck is excited to be able to introduce these healing techniques into the lives of patients at Bastyr Center for Natural Health.

“Nature Cure principles have been used for hundreds of years and they are proven to be effective,” says Dr. Beck. “The applications of these principles on a regular basis keep the body systems working well, so when you come in contact with toxins and pathogens your body has a better chance of defending itself and healing from any illness that results from these exposures.”

Some Nature Cure techniques include hydrotherapy, peat therapy, steam and dry sauna, and are effective for a variety of ailments from asthma to back pain, according to Dr. Beck. The treatments are also effective for pain reduction, treatment of immune system deficiencies and support of the body’s detoxification process.
