Vitamin-D and the SunThe Benefits of Vitamin D
Vitamin D, a vital nutrient normally gained through exposure to the sun, is elusive to Puget Sounders during the winter months. However, the benefits of vitamin D are considerable. A new study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that women over the age of 55 with consistently high levels of calcium and vitamin D had a 60 percent less chance of developing cancer. Read more about this amazing study and find out how much vitamin D postmenopausal women should take. Additionally, the Archives of Internal Medicine recently published an extensive study that suggests a vitamin-D deficiency increases a person's risk of death. The good news? Supplementing with vitamin D can reduce your risk of death and help prevent chronic illnesses. Learn more about this incredible study and how it applies to you. And, while you may think that spending a few hours outdoors will provide you with all the vitamin D you need, a new study suggests otherwise. In this study, 50 percent of participants living in Honolulu, Hawaii (with nearly 30 hours of sun exposure a week) were vitamin-D deficient. Learn more about vitamin D's relationship to sun exposure.
