Welcome to Health E-News! The holiday season is upon us! In this special mini-issue, learn about two holiday-related Bastyr events. On Saturday, December 1, shop at our annual Bastyr Dispensary Holiday Extravaganza to find the perfect gifts for friends, family and yourself. Later that evening, enjoy an evening of music and dance at our Eighth Annual Celtic Holiday Concert in our beautiful University chapel in Kenmore.

After the holidays, it's time to make 2008 the year to become a healthier you. You might try our popular and groundbreaking weight-management program, "Weigh to Go." Another great way to improve your health in the coming year is to increase your intake of vitamin D. Bastyr University Presents the Eighth Annual Celtic Holiday Concert

Enjoy the sounds of the season on Saturday, December 1, at 7 p.m. in Bastyr University's aesthetically and acoustically stunning chapel in Kenmore. This concert features Northwest songwriter Stanley Greenthal, multi-instrumentalist Joel Bernstein, vocalist Kip Greenthal, Scottish music ensemble Oran nan Car, and SRS Dance Company (an Irish dance troupe). Shed Pounds by Participating in Our "Weigh to Go" Program

Bastyr Center's groundbreaking weight-management program returns! If you're looking for a better way to lose weight, try this comprehensive program that combines individualized counseling with weekly group classes on nutrition and eating habits. Through this program, you will learn how to set goals, manage stress, incorporate more activity into your daily life, navigate temptation and avoid overeating. Vitamin-D and the Sun The Benefits of Vitamin D
Vitamin D, a vital nutrient normally gained through exposure to the sun, is elusive to Puget Sounders during the winter months. However, the benefits of vitamin D are considerable. A new study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that women over the age of 55 with consistently high levels of calcium and vitamin D had a 60 percent less chance of developing cancer. Read more about this amazing study and find out how much vitamin D postmenopausal women should take. Additionally, the Archives of Internal Medicine recently published an extensive study that suggests a vitamin-D deficiency increases a person's risk of death. The good news? Supplementing with vitamin D can reduce your risk of death and help prevent chronic illnesses. Learn more about this incredible study and how it applies to you. And, while you may think that spending a few hours outdoors will provide you with all the vitamin D you need, a new study suggests otherwise.
